The benefits to young people of being exposed to managed risk are well known. Pro-Active Adventure have conducted some pioneering research into the subject. A visit to a the Tyn Dwr Hall Centre will give students an opportunity to learn first hand the exhilaration of the outdoors, with the comfort of knowing they are supported by our excellent safety standards and highly qualified staff.

Our Priorities

Understanding of health and safety runs through every aspect of what we do, but we still encourage all of our staff and visitors to identify further improvements. Our centre management teams regularly review our programmes and carry out health and safety audits. Everyone from Centre Manager to Board Directors, Operations Staff and instructors get involved on a daily basis in making sure all aspects of our centres meet the highest standards. We also work closely with outside consultants to ensure we set appropriate targets, all are experts in activity provision, facility maintenance or health and safety management.

Meeting national standards

Some activities, such as water sports, mountain activities and caving require activity providers to prove they meet national safety standards. The Adventurous Activities Licensing Service (AALS) issues licences to activity providers to operate activities that have been externally inspected to confirm they are: safe, well organised and that risk is being managed appropriately. Details of the licenses Pro-Active holds can be found at www.aals.org.uk

LOtC

Pro-Active Adventure Tyn Dwr was one of the first centres to gain the “Learning Outside the Classroom” badge. Case studies from our work with schools is available to view on the LOtC web site. Alternatively you can review the report Here.

Risk assessments

Risk Assessments form the building blocks for ensuring effective health & safety management and underpin the health & safety for all school trips. We operate comprehensive generic risk assessments for all our activities, which are then backed up by site-specific risk assessments to take into account any local anomalies or specific risks. In addition, a “dynamic risk assessment” is carried out on an ongoing basis by the instructor leading each activity on the day to reflect ongoing changes to conditions.

Safe programmes

All of our activity and learning programmes are operated in accordance with strict operational standards that define the minimum requirements for instructor qualifications, supervision, equipment, facilities and appropriate clothing. Individual activities follow a defined session plan and all instructors are regularly observed to ensure they are complying with our safety and delivery standards. These operating standards obviously also extend to cover our off-site programmes, such as beach visits and field studies groups to places of historic interest or outstanding natural beauty. All instructors are trained in our detailed “Off-site procedures” All off-site venues are inspected for their suitability before being used. All instructor leading groups to an off-site venue are first aid trained and take a first aid kit and mobile telephone with them.
