Crete, The Expedition Island
Without doubt, Crete is our favourite European destination. It’s ideal for a more relaxing school trip abroad. Crete is well known as a package holiday destination, but we aim to give you a chance to sample its traditional hospitality among real locals. We rarely go to package tour locations and we definitely don’t use any package tour accommodation. The people you meet are our personal friends: people we fly with, climb with, ride with and cave with. Fully catered hotels, half board or self catering are all available. We are usually based in a small coastal village of Kalyves, but of course, depending on the trip you choose, we could be in other locations across the island. Kalyves itself is a small fishing village with low level tourism which has not taken from its natural charm.
For your school trip abroad in Crete, we operate Expeditions and Multi Activity Weeks. Trips include all our usual range of activities, which are all provided by your UK qualified instructor and a local guide. Our good friends, Jimi and Niko, are our local instructors; they are total professionals in their sport and obviously have unquestionable local knowledge to take you to off-beat locations and places of interest. This is definitely not the usual bucket and spade package holiday, so be prepared for something a little different.
Flights to Crete usually arrive on a Tuesday and we generally arrive in Kalyves about mid-afternoon. Once you have settled in, we will take you for a walk around the village to show you the best shops and tavernas then it’s time to get down to the beach for a swim before your evening meal. Your evening meal is included in the cost on the first day.
Today we travel to the gorge of Therissou to go climbing. After lunch, we return to Kalyves to spend some time on the beach and have a beach safety demonstration from the local lifeguard, Nikos. During the evening we visit the ancient town of Aptera and start the “Omega Challenge”: a cultural knowledge quiz.
The morning is spent mountain biking in the orange groves near Stylos. After lunch, we pack and travel to Falasarna for our overnight camp. Here we have a choice of spending the evening enjoying a BBQ on the beach or eating at a local taverna.
Today we break camp and head back to Kalyves to drop off our kit before going canoeing. We will paddle out to “Rabbit Island” and then, after a chance to swim, we continue to a small beach where you will hear the legend of when a pirate ship was turned to stone by the local priest. The small stone island really does look like an old Mediterranean pirate ship! You will have a chance to do some fishing from the harbour during the evening, if you choose.
This morning, we visit some sites from the battle of Crete. In the afternoon we take our practise hike in the White Mountains in preparation for the Imbros trek.
Today is spent travelling to Imbros, visiting a small private museum dedicated to the battle of Crete on the way. Taking our picnic lunch, the remainder of the day is taken up by our trek through the beautiful Imbros gorge.
Today we visit the ancient Venetian capital of Crete, Hania. Here you will be given a sight seeing trip followed by a chance to do some shopping. You will then have the afternoon free to go to the water park or take a short cruise. In the evening we have a farewell meal and the awards for the Omega Challenge.
We pack in preparation to return home.
Other activity options include: camping trips to remote beaches, 4X4 treks, and archaeological and museum visits. The island of Crete has many beautiful villages and places of interest to see. Please call our office to discuss your choice.
