University senior lecturer

The input from Jon and his staff was first class and the feedback from the students was extremely positive. The structure of the input and the opportunities to “explore “ their abilities is very impactive upon the individuals. I feel that the staff really do go the extra mile to ensure that the students not only undertake the tasks, but also understand the learning and development outcomes from doing so.”

Prior to the team building weekend the group had been struggling with low trust levels, tensions, intercultural conflicts, dominance struggles and competitiveness. The team building activities significantly contributed to the improvement of the group dynamics, mutual understanding and individual self confidence which proved to be highly beneficial for the students’ academic and professional development. It greatly increased the trust levels within the group, which is very important for their study experience and group work. It also encouraged students to learn about themselves and engage in their personal analysis, acknowledging their weaknesses and areas for improvement and future development planning.

Personally, I grade the weekend in Wales a professional as well as a personal success. This bond and knowledge also helped in supporting one another individually when confronted with professional or personal difficulties during our stay.

The team building weekend really brought the class together. I had a great time even though I was one of the biggest sceptics in the class before we left.”

University head of department

Personally, I was very pleased with the variety of activities, and the sensitive way in which people were treated. Also the instructors related the methodology being used by the various teams when carrying out tasks to the overall theme of EFFECTIVE team building. Overlying it was a sense of personal achievement by many team members. I have no reservations about recommending a similar day to any and all teams.”

Just wanted to take a bit of time out to pass on my gratitude for another fabulous weekend with the Frontier Ed. guys. They really are an exceptional bunch who help the students to achieve so much. Have been trying to figure out how to explain to someone what you all do and why it’s of benefit to the students. It’s really hard to put it into words because it’s so all encompassing. Thank you for helping them to develop skills which they can take forward into their university and professional lives and for making our job so much easier!”

“ The course was excellent and the students not only had a good academic experience but a fantastic personal development experience. They came to Tyn Dwr as individuals they left as a team and this has become very obvious in class as they now know each other. The facilitators Tony and Gav were professional, knowledgeable and considerate to the needs of the students which only enhanced the student experience. I believe they got so much more out of this than they could have expected so can I take this opportunity to thank you and the staff for facilitating such a great course”

Giles Mcclelland LBS

“In brief we loved it. The students bonded, the day surpassed our expectations and the intangible outcomes of greater group cohesion and emotional and social interdependence were surpassed too. The team who facilitated the day were fantastic. Overall the benefits accrued were significant.”

“I have spoken with all members of staff who attended and a significant number of students. Everyone was extremely complementary about the whole experience. The girls were impressed that they stayed in the Yurts and became true Yurters!

Rebecca Varszegi FIS Student

“I went on the Tyn Dwr Yurting experience, and thought it was fantastic! I have a huge fear of heights, but with the help of the group leader and peers I managed to abseil down a 100ft rockface! The overall experience is great. You meet new people and learn how far you can push yourself as an individual and as part of a group. Highly recommended to future students.”

Gemma Rodway FIS Student

“Just passing on a bit of feedback about the couple of days at Tyn Dwr. I had a great time. I learnt a lot about how far I can push myself and also made some good friends. All the instructors who I had contact with were lovely! I would love to go again!”

Sue Minten SSTO

“It went really well in terms of logistics and Tony was on form – just a pretty boring, or as Tony described them, ‘wishy washy’ group. He did get somewhere with a couple of them. However I did finally have a go at leap of faith but only managed to get to the top of the pole and couldn’t stand up on the top.”

  • “The weekend went really well, students really enjoyed it. They think more positively about the group work now and I think they finally realised what the value of the group work is. We have a lot of very strong personalities in that class, so the team work was really difficult at the beginning – a lot of bickering and little done, but they got a lot better in the end.

  • Nick and Danny were great (as always) and students really enjoyed the experience. When we were out on Saturday night, they were saying that they never believed in this team-building stuff and that only now they see it really works. They thought they knew each other, but only after this weekend they realised how little they know”

Alenka Jelen LBS

  •  “It was a great learning experience.  The programme is one of the must programmes to bring out hidden talents and skills and also very helpful to develop skills lacked. For example: better co-ordination, adjustments, responsibility, learning need, equality, team feeling, focus, vision, depth of subject, leadership, submission, unity, trust, love.   Both instructors  were highly motivating and clear in their tasks.  They make a perfect team. The weekend let me learn to accept differences and still be a part of team, focus and step up confidently to achieve my goal and create trust and build team spirit. “  Student from LBS (MSc IAC)

  • “The weekend in Wales was incredible. We all came together as a group and also opened ourselves up as individuals. The teambuilding activities are very smartly designed as they challenge the mind more than the body. I enjoyed myself thoroughly! The instructors, Danny and Nick held the group together. They were extremely encouraging, supportive and enthusiastic about the activities. I think I would come back for it again if I had a chance!” Student from LBS (MSc IAC)

  • “It was a unique experience, which gave us the chance to experience something most of us would probably never had had the chance to experience otherwise. The team games were fun and the tutors were amazing, providing enough guidance and suggestions, but still letting us figure out our mistakes and points for improvement on our own. The ropes and climbing were exhilarating. Danny and Nick were very supportive, guiding each person individually and pushing them to their respective limits. They’re great professionals and a lot of fun to be around. I’m very glad to have met them and to have had this chance to be part of what they do.  The weekend was a wonderful opportunity to get to know my colleagues better and to strengthen our relationships, challenging ourselves both as individuals and as segments of a whole. Many thanks to Danny and Nick for a wonderful weekend and to Alenka for making it possible to have this great experience!“  Student from LBS (MSc IAC)

  • “I love it! All the activities are great and the instructor’s very good professionals! Regarding the facilities, staying in yurts was a problem and having to take ‘a trip’ to the toilet!” Student from LBS (MSc IAC)

  • “The activities we did during our weekend were not only about the adrenalin and action. What I found even more valuable was to getting to know each other and maybe even more important to get to know yourself. Challenges, that were given to us through various games, brought up different views and styles of decision making, problem solving, leadership and managing a group. Through these experiences and debates one can learn to acknowledge and respect others ideas and constructively work in a team. On the other hand the action on high ropes, poll and climbing included adrenalin and even though I’m familiar with these kind of activities, it was a challenge to again face my fears, control them and get the job done. Overall it was an educational event, filled with action, adrenalin and really a lot of fun. Thank you Danny and Nick for your energy and knowledge. You truly are professionals at what you do.” Student from LBS (MSc IAC)

  • “As a matter of fact it was a time well spent. As a new comer to the group it gave me the opportunity to relate well with others, to be familiar with the entire group and the environment. Indeed, the couching team was excellent well prepared to put us through the various stages of the games and activities we were made to go through. What needs to be addressed is about the timing of some of the activities. Much time should be spent on the rope activities so that people have another go of that” Student from LBS (MSc IAC)

  • “I was really enjoying the Team Building Programme last weekend in Wales. Nick and Daniel are good-tempered and patient guys. I didn’t engage in this kind of programme before, I had a deep impression this time, not only my friendly classmates made me know the different cultures, but also I learnt how to have a teamwork, how to overcome the difficulties, how to deal with the hard work with others.“ Student from LBS (MSc IAC)

  • “Enjoyed the experience; one might call it a journey into fear as a form of self discovery. I think Danny was particularly adept at instilling confidence and getting the jittery to surprise even themselves. The facility`s many group games afford insights – it is GREAT!” Student from LBS (MSc IAC)

  • “I think the way Danny described it sums up our experience best: The more you put in it the more you’ll get out of it. I think we put in a lot as a group and therefore got a lot out of it in return. Even though we were quite close as a group before we went to Wales we got to know each other even better while up there. A lot of us were pushed to our limits and were forced to face our fears but all in a constructive way under the guidance of two great guys and professionals. When we will remember this course later on in life, Pro-Active will definitely be a part of that memory.”       Student from LBS (MSc IAC)

Geoffrey Thwaites UCLAN Launch Pad

The Pro-Active Adventure team were highly professional as needed, but informal and friendly too.

They did a great job of building trust within the groups and towards themselves really quickly, highlighted by the teams wanting to keep ‘their’ leader.

The encouragement and support given to LP5 members as each faced their stretch and panic areas helped people to go beyond and to achieve. They created a really positive atmosphere and encouraged and gave really good feedback.

The shields and reflection leading up to the conclusion of the weekend have set LP5 on a strong path of development for the rest of the programme.

Best wishes

Geoff

Hi Clive,

It was an amazing weekend, the changes that you have made to the programme for us had a HUGE impact.  This year’s group were exceptional, I think you saw that too, and I know that we will have a great time with them as they continue the rest of their LP journey.  I know that I said this as you were leaving, but getting this first weekend right is the most important element of the programme, you do this SO well for us, we really appreciate the work that you and your team put in.
