The Outdoor Education Centre at St Briavels is a venue with a real “WOW” factor that will amaze and inspire young and old alike. The Castle is over 800 years old, with bags of character and remarkably well-preserved features throughout, and a magical charm that promotes social interaction and historical interest in equal measure. The Castle is a Grade 1 listed ancient monument, a rich piece of our heritage and an inspiring location. The perfect background for school activity breaks, where students really do “learn outside the classroom” as they are transported back in time to Medieval world of King John and the Magna Carta.

We work closely with the YHA at their hostels to provide an extremely professional outdoor education experience. Outdoor activities at St Briavels Castle are largely mountain, lake and river based however we can offer our full range of activities from here, please see our sample programmes for your options. We offer 2 – 5 day activity programmes that are designed individually to meet you and your pupils individual needs.

St Briavels Castle has 66 beds in the following layout: 1 x 4, 3 x 6, 1 x 8, 1 x 10, 1 x 12 and 1 x 14. There are also two spacious “dormitory” rooms, forming the tops of the two towers, which are perfect for larger school groups. The social spaces of the Castle were reconfigured in 2015 to create an amazing banqueting hall fit for a King! This makes St Briavels an ideal location for your school activity trip to Wales.

All activities are led by National Governing Body qualified instructors. Off-site activities we offer are: Gorge walking, Sit on kayaking, Climbing and abseiling, Forest treks, Mountain biking, Orienteering and Raft building. On site there is: Bush Craft and Archery. Not far from the castle is the forest itself, ideal for self-led activities. All activities are the same cost so are interchangeable with other activities from our list. There are also numerous historical and places of interest close by for teachers to run self-led activities in the evenings.

Regarding accommodation and catering there is one free teacher place for every 10 pupils. Any additional teaching staff do not pay for any activities, only the accommodation and catering, however of course, they are welcome to join in activities. Activity programmes are designed individually to meet your pupils needs, the level of activity can be delivered to meet all skill levels and age group. Curriculum activities that we can cover from this location cover: Geology, Geography, History, Environmental studies and of course Physical education. For schools on longer or repeat visits National Governing Body awards are possible. Pre-visit site inspections are welcome so please call us to arrange one that suits you.
