School Activity Trips: Orienteering

On your school activity trips Orienteering is an exciting outdoor adventure sport that exercises your pupils mind and body. The aim is to navigate between checkpoints or controls marked on a special orienteering map. There is no set route so the skill and fun come from trying to find the best way to go.

At Pro-Active Adventure competitive orienteering, challenge is to complete the course in the quickest time and work out the anagram from the letters collected at each check point. Orienteering can take place anywhere, such as forests, parks, moorland, coastal areas, and hostel grounds.

Orienteering offers many benefits, but its biggest attraction is fun! It is a joy to walk and run through forests and fields armed with a compass and a map. In this thrilling chase, pupils must put their navigational skills to the test and navigate from point to point in unfamiliar terrain to win.

Other benefits include:

  • It improves our Vitamin D levels. The Vitamin D Council says “your body is designed to get the vitamin D it needs by producing it when your bare skin is exposed to sunlight”.
  • Pupils exposed to the natural world showed increases in self-esteem. Some have said that they felt it taught them how to take risks, unleashed their creativity and gave them a chance to exercise, play, and discover.
  • Orienteering involves walking, jogging and running, often in rough terrain. All three of these activities increase aerobic capacity and cardiovascular strength.
  • Decisions that constantly arise. Like which way to go, left or right? Should we go around the hill or up the hill? All these decisions, along with the navigation, require thinking more than quick reactions or instinct, that is why orienteering is often called the thinking sport.

Teams have to decide how quick they can go whilst still remaining on course. “Less haste more speed”
