School Activity Trips: Sit On Kayaking

On your next school activity trips sit on kayaking is an excellent way to introduce your pupils to traditional kayaking skills. We have moved away from the usual centre “Closed cockpit kayak” simply because we have seen that pupils find it very intimidating when they capsize. In fact so much so sometime pupils are reluctant to get into a kayak. Our fleet of sit on kayaks are a great learning platform for pupils on a school residential adventure. They are easy to manoeuvre, relatively stable and are easy to right if they do fall off. The experience of sit on kayaking not only enables your pupils to exercise, it is great fun, and a great way to experiencing nature.

Pupils are able to personally challenge themselves in a non-competitive manner, however being in small group sizes of no more than 20 they can also share excitement and achievements with others.

Sit on kayaking will develop pupils individual physical co-ordination, communication, working with others and their level of fitness. This is a traditional adventure experience for pupils on a residential activity trip, but we feel enhanced by the use of sit on tops instead of the slightly intimidating closed cockpit kayaks.

Sit on canoeing is a low impact activity that can improve pupils aerobic fitness, strength and flexibility. Specific health benefits include:

  • Improved cardiovascular fitness
  • Increased muscle strength, particularly in the back, arms, shoulders and chest, from moving the paddle
  • Increased torso and leg strength, as the strength to power a Kayaks comes mainly from rotating the torso and applying pressure with your legs
  • Reduced risk of wear-and-tear on joints and tissues, since paddling is a low impact activity.

Some other good reasons to paddle include:

  • Kayaking can be peaceful and meditative or can be exhilarating, depending on where and how you do it. Canals are safe and tranquil for young groups with no experience. Also slow-moving rivers can be used to develop confidence before commencing a full river trip. Sea kayaking can be more challenging for more confident groups, once they have developed their techniques in a sheltered harbour.
  • With the sit on kayaking communication between paddlers is key, and so develops listening and co-ordination skills.
  • Paddling is a great way to enjoy our waterways, kayaking will help you see places from a different perspective, spot wildlife you’d not see otherwise and enjoy places that many others don’t get to go see.
  • Paddling is also an effective education tool to show the effects of erosion, the need for wild life conservation and the effects of pollution on the environment.
